Israel killed a senior Hezbollah commander on Wednesday, two sources told AFP, in an attack on Beirut that Lebanon’s health ministry said killed seven people.
A Lebanese security source and a Hezbollah source told AFP that commander Youssef Hashem was in charge of the group’s military affairs in Iraq and was in a tent meeting when Israel launched the attack.
The Israeli military said Hashem was Hezbollah’s commander for the southern front in Lebanon.
Lebanon was drawn into the Middle East war in early March when Hezbollah, backed by Tehran, launched rockets at Israel in retaliation for a US-Israeli strike that killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Israel responded with massive attacks across Lebanon and a ground offensive.
A source close to Hezbollah said Hashem was “the most senior official to be targeted since the beginning of the war.”
Another Hezbollah member, Mohammad Baqir al-Nabulsi, was also killed in the attack in Beirut’s Jnah area, the group said.
