By early Sunday morning, police in the eastern German state of Saxony had already recorded 32 accidents, and there were problems elsewhere.
In the capital Berlin, many emergency services were overwhelmed as people arrived with various broken bones due to icy road conditions, the weekly Tagesspiegel reported.
The German Meteorological Service expects slippery roads to remain until mid-morning, especially in the central part of the country. It could rain and then freeze on the ground. However, warmer temperatures are expected by noon, which should melt the black ice.
A spokesman for the Saxon police department said officers were “mostly busy with these accidents”. In one case in Zwickau in the south, a driver collided with a road sign due to a slippery road. Investigators estimate the damage at around 23,000 euros ($27,000). The driver was not injured.
In eastern Hesse, a 19-year-old lost control of his car on a slippery road. The car overturned several times, police said. The ambulance transported the driver and his 20-year-old passenger, both seriously injured, to the hospital.
In southern Hessen, an 18-year-old girl lost control of her vehicle while overtaking another vehicle on a slippery winter road and went down a slope, hitting a tree. Her companion was slightly injured and was treated at the scene of the accident by an ambulance, the police said.
There have already been numerous accidents on Friday night and Saturday morning due to slippery roads, especially in the north of the country.
Black ice is a thin layer of ice on roads or sidewalks that is almost invisible because it blends in with the dark surface, making driving and walking extremely dangerous.
