“On the night from Wednesday to Thursday, the police prevented three people from trying to damage the private sports plane of the president of the German government,” said the state prosecutor’s office in Arnsberg, West Germany, where Friedrich Merz’s private address is, reports HINA.
The announcement states that three people aged 23, 28 and 56 trespassed into the Arnsberg-Menden airport, but the police prevented damage to the plane that was in one of the hangars.
Among the detained activists is the well-known German climate activist Anja Windl. After the action, the Otpor kolektiv group, which took responsibility for the attempted attack, issued a statement.
“As part of the protest, we tried to disable Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s private plane. And while the climate crisis is escalating, the German chancellor is driving around in a private plane,” the group said in a statement.
One of the detained activists, Anja Windl, is also the subject of an investigation in Austria after she damaged the headquarters of the Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP) with paint in order to prevent this party from negotiating with the right-wing FPÖ.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has a pilot’s license and is in possession of a twin-engine plane of Austrian production Diamond DA62, which, as reported by the German media, at the time of purchase seven years ago, was worth around one million euros.
