In the Alpine region of Valtellina, an avalanche buried three skiers, two of whom died. Rescue teams responded quickly, but the two could not be helped.
The Italian mountain rescue service announced that two more avalanches occurred in the Trentino region, each killing one person. Details about the circumstances of those accidents are still being determined.
The incident was also recorded in the Aosta Valley, in an area close to the border with Switzerland and France. There, an avalanche engulfed a group of five skiers, with two people buried in the snow. Thanks to the appropriate safety equipment, they managed to free themselves before rescuers arrived.
All these events happened on a day that the expert services assessed as high-risk when it comes to avalanches. For most of the affected areas, there was a warning of the third degree of danger out of a total of five on the European scale, which implies a significant risk and increased probability of avalanches.
