Today, he reaches eleven years of catastrophic floods in May 2014. at the north and northeast of Bosnia and Herzegovina, leaving havoc, human sacrifices and enormous material damage.
After multi-day abundant, 14. Maja Navičer Bosna broke through the trough, and the next day, Maglaj, Doboj, Samac, Odžak and numerous other cities and villages. The Sava River was poured in Domaljevac and Orašje, Usora was flooded by Doboj South, while preventing the industrial zone in Gracanica completely, turning the surrounding area into the Great Lake.
The floods left an unprecedented disaster – life in tens of communities, thousands of people remained without a roof over the head, and the damage was estimated in hundreds of millions of convertible marks. It was especially difficult in Doboj, where life lost 11 people, mostly old and sick, who failed to leave their homes in time.
Maglaj was then one of the hardest affected cities. The streets were covered with sludge, garbage, destroyed furniture and apparatus. 1,650 households have been flooded, and almost 6,000 people left without their homes. Almost 300 economic buildings were destroyed, which further jeopardized the economic stability of the region.
After the water withdrawal, there were a number of landslides that further aggravated the situation. In the village of Kosovo, a part of the M-17 main road was damaged in Maglaj, while 71 housing facility was completely destroyed.
Recovery lasted for years, with the help of international organizations, domestic institutions and the non-governmental sector. Although many communities have managed to renovate basic infrastructure and normalize life, the collective memory of these days remains deeply engraved in the consciousness of the inhabitants of affected areas.
On this day, we recall lost lives, but also shown solidarity, courage and communion that many expressed in the most difficult moments. This anniversary is a reminder of the importance of investment in flood protection, strengthening civil protection and the construction of more resistant communities.
