The captain of the national team of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Edin Džeko, used his days off to return to the city where he made one of the biggest strides in his career and recorded his first major successes.
Last weekend, Dzeko was one of the key players in Schalke 04’s 2:1 victory away at Holstein Kiel.
He registered two assists to help his team end a five-game winless streak, returning Schalke to the top of the 2nd Bundesliga.
After the important celebration, Schalke coach Miron Muslić rewarded the team with free time. Dzeko used this opportunity to travel with his family to Wolfsburg and visit his former club VfL Wolfsburg, whose jersey he wore in the early days of his international career.
It was with Wolfsburg that Dzeko won the German championship in 2009, finishing the season ahead of Bayern Munich, which was a big surprise at the time.
That success was the springboard for a transfer to Manchester City, where he further cemented his status on the European stage.
During the visit, his wife Amra shared a photo with the 2009 championship trophy. In Wolfsburg, they enthusiastically welcomed the former goalscorer and allowed him to bring the trophy to the Volkswagen Arena again, just as he did 17 years ago.
Although he won numerous trophies in the meantime, the title with Wolfsburg has a special place in his career and among the fans because of the way it was won.
Džeko and Schalke do not have much respite, because they will face a new challenge against 1. FC Magdeburg on their home field already on Saturday at 20:30.
It will be an opportunity to further strengthen the leadership position in Zvajta.
