Since the start of his era in Florence, Dzeko has not enjoyed the status he deserves. He was out of favor with the coach and was getting playing time “on a drip”, even when he was expected to play.
In an interview with Bild, Dzeko revealed why he left Fiorentina after just a few months, and described the moment that was decisive for him to decide to leave.
“We played away against Parma in December. It was a key match against a direct competitor for survival. I was alone on the bench and we conceded a goal,” recalls Dzeko, then continues:
“I started to warm up and a few minutes before the end, our coach made a substitution. He replaced the defender with another defender (Gosens for Parisi). Then I told myself that it can’t go on like this”.
“Immediately after the match I called the agent and told him that. A day later we had lunch with the team. I sat down and thought about what I wanted next. I found the answer – a stadium with hellish fans. A club that could motivate me again and Schalke came to mind,” said our captain.
Edin Dzeko scored with the transfer to Schalke because in the first five games in this club’s jersey he participated in as many as seven goals – four goals and three assists.
On the other hand, Fiorentina has also started better since Dzeko is no longer there, considering that this club tied several good results and moved out of the danger zone.
