Ground leveling has begun on Trgovska Gora where the construction of the Center for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste is planned, and so far eight buildings have been demolished at that location, the Croatian Fund for Financing the Decommissioning and Disposal of Radioactive Waste and Spent Nuclear Fuel of the “Krško” Nuclear Power Plant confirmed.
As they clarified, this is the last activity within the project of removing the existing facilities and will last until June at the latest.
The Fund stated that the request for the initiation of the environmental impact assessment procedure in connection with the establishment of the Center for the disposal of radioactive waste at the Čerkezovac location on Trgovska Gora will soon be submitted to the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Green Transition of Croatia.
They added that the Ministry, upon receiving the request, will review the study and appoint a commission.
“If the commission determines that the study is complete and expertly based, it will be sent to a public discussion”, stated the Fund, adding that the study will be available on their website and the Ministry’s website.
When asked about the announced hearing before the Secretariat of the ESPO Convention in Geneva on May 15, scheduled at the request of BiH, the Fund stated that their representatives would attend the meeting.
“We believe that the activities undertaken so far to establish the Center for the disposal of radioactive waste in Čerkezovac are in accordance with the Croatian and international legal framework that regulates the disposal of radioactive waste and the impact on the environment”, the Fund announced.
Croatia plans to store radioactive waste from the “Krško” Nuclear Power Plant, as well as existing institutional waste, on Trgovska Gora in the municipality of Dvor, right on the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina.
At the regular session of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was held today, information was received from the Attorney General of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Federal Ministry of Environment and Tourism regarding Croatia’s intention to dispose of radioactive waste at the Trgovska Gora location.
The Presidency asked the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina to urgently implement the conclusions of January 12, 2026 and to submit written information within 15 days, it says. Klix.
