Bird flu was confirmed on a farm in the municipality of Petrovo in the Republic of Srpska, which is why the competent institutions sent an important notice to poultry farmers and ordered the immediate implementation of biosecurity measures on farms and households that keep poultry.
The Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Water Management and Forestry and the Federal Administration for Inspection Affairs announced that the occurrence of the disease was confirmed according to the official information of the Veterinary Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina. After confirming the infection, the veterinary services immediately initiated the prescribed measures and established infected and threatened areas.
Areas of increased surveillance include parts of the municipalities of Petrovo and Doboj in the Republic of Srpska, and Doboj Istok and Gračanica in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In these locations, intensive control is carried out, with additional measures to prevent the spread of the disease to other farms.
Bird flu is a highly contagious disease that affects poultry, and chickens and turkeys are the most susceptible. Wild birds often do not show severe symptoms, but they can be carriers of the virus and represent a source of infection for domestic poultry.
For this reason, poultry farmers were recommended to strengthen biosecurity measures and prevent domestic poultry from coming into contact with wild birds. It is recommended to keep poultry in closed buildings, protect windows with nets and prevent access to food and water used by domestic poultry.
It is also warned that poultry should not be fed water from open sources such as puddles, rainwater or barrels, and that unauthorized persons must be restricted from entering farms. Special caution is required when entering facilities with poultry, so it is advised to wash clothes and shoes regularly, as well as to avoid visiting other poultry farms.
The competent services point out that the occurrence of avian flu can cause major economic consequences, because in the case of confirmation of the disease, the removal of infected poultry is carried out, the movement of animals is restricted and the circulation of poultry products is prohibited.
Poultry farmers were instructed to immediately report any change in the health status of the flock to the nearest veterinary station, in order to react in time and prevent further spread of the infection. Competent institutions continue to monitor the situation on the ground and announce that they will regularly inform the public about all new information related to the occurrence of bird flu, it says.
