– British citizens will be able to travel to China without a visa if they stay for less than 30 days – said Starmer after the meeting with President Xi Jinping, evaluating it as a victory for the business community, reports Reuters.
Companies, as stated in Starmer’s statement, were “crying for ways to expand their presence in China”, adding that the visa-free regime will facilitate expansion in that market and contribute to the creation of jobs in the UK.
One of the main objectives of his four-day visit is to stimulate the growth of the relatively sluggish British economy.
As part of what Britain called a “new partnership”, the two countries also agreed to carry out a feasibility study that could pave the way for a bilateral services agreement, which would further help British firms operating in China.
Britain’s economy relies heavily on a strong service sector, and the partnership will aim to strengthen cooperation in healthcare, financial and professional services, legal services, education and skills development, the statement said.
It added that the UK exports £13 billion worth of services to China annually, and that demand from China is growing.
