Military officials have presented plans for the operation to the government and are awaiting a decision from Prime Minister Mark Carney, a source told Reuters.
US President Donald Trump’s threats to take over Greenland pose a challenge for Carney, who wants to show solidarity with European allies but also seeks to maintain good relations with Trump, who has previously threatened to annex Canada.
“We are concerned about this escalation, let me be absolutely clear. We will always support the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, regardless of their geographic location,” Carney told reporters in Doha on Sunday.
European countries sent a small number of military personnel to Greenland last week. Germany, France, Sweden, Norway, Finland and the Netherlands said they were deploying troops to begin preparations for major military exercises planned for later this year.
