Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand said Canada wants a change of government in Iran, but did not specify whether it would support a possible military strike by the United States of America, The Globe and Mail newspaper reported on Saturday.
– We will not establish diplomatic relations with Iran until there is a change of regime. Period – Anand said in an interview with The Globe and Mail during her stay in Germany, where she is attending the Munich Security Conference.
Canada has extremely bad relations with Iran, and broke off diplomatic ties back in 2012.
On Saturday, Anand announced additional sanctions against seven people associated with the Iranian government, noting that Canada’s focus in the region is on human rights abuses and repression.
According to the Reuters agency, the US military is preparing for the possibility of several weeks of operations against Iran, if President Donald Trump issues an attack order. Two US officials said such a scenario could turn into a much more serious conflict than has been seen between the two countries before.
On Friday, Trump supported the possibility of regime change in Iran, while the Pentagon sent a second aircraft carrier to the region.
