Bad weather forced organizers to change plans to light the Olympic flame in the ancient city of Olympia on the Greek Peloponnese peninsula, so the ceremony for the Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina will be moved to the Archaeological Museum of Olympia on Wednesday, the Greek Olympic Committee said.
The relocation is necessary to ensure the safety of guests and maintain the dignity of the ceremony, the Greeks said, as unstable weather is expected on the Peloponnese peninsula, with strong winds and possibly even rain and storms.
This will make the traditional outdoor lighting of the Olympic flame using mirrors and sunlight impossible, reports Hina.
In such cases, a replacement flame is lit in the days before the event in a special torch.
The official flame is then lit from that torch, and the torch is then carried in a relay to the host city of the Olympic Games.
The bad weather forecast is a big disappointment for fans of the ceremony as usually several thousand people gather on the terraced slopes surrounding the ancient stadium in Olympia to watch the event live.
Now the organizers will even have to turn away some of the already invited guests due to the very limited capacity of the museum building.
