According to official data from the Agency for Medicines and Medical Devices of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the most money was spent on expensive anti-cancer drugs.
– In the first place according to the financial amount in 2024 are antineoplastics and immunomodulators, in the second place are drugs for the cardiovascular system and in the third place are drugs for the alimentary tract and metabolism – wrote from the Agency for “Avaz”.
Antineoplastics and immunomodulators are mainly anticancer drugs and drugs that strengthen or regulate the immune system. They are used in the treatment of cancer, autoimmune diseases and more severe chronic diseases, which is why they are the most expensive.
Medicines for the cardiovascular system are medicines for the heart and blood vessels and these include therapies for high blood pressure, heart disease, arrhythmias, blood clotting and similar problems that many people have.
Medicines for the stomach, intestines and metabolism are listed third. This group includes medicines for diabetes, stomach problems, digestion, blood fats and the like.
According to the Agency’s official data, at the top of the list of best-selling drugs according to the international non-proprietary name in 2024 are expensive cancer therapies, such as pembrolizumab and atezolizumab, which are used in severe malignant diseases and work by helping the immune system fight against the disease.
Much of the money also goes to heart and blood vessel drugs, primarily blood thinners such as rivaroxaban and apixaban, which are used to prevent strokes and blood clots.
Among the most used are the medicines that citizens take every day – paracetamol and ibuprofen for pain and fever, pantoprazole for stomach problems and acid reduction, and aspirin, which is often used in heart therapy.
The list also includes a combination of ibuprofen and pseudoephedrine for cold and flu symptoms, as well as empagliflozin, a diabetes drug that helps regulate blood sugar, but also protects the heart and kidneys, it says. Avaz.
