Sales of beer containing alcohol by German brewers fell by a record 6 percent to 7.8 billion liters (2.06 billion gallons) in 2025, official data released on Monday showed.
This is the lowest figure since the beginning of record keeping in 1993, announced the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).
As such, it is even lower than during the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021, when restaurants and bars were subject to strict restrictions in an effort to contain the spread of COVID-19.
The huge reduction comes as many consumers either cut back or switch to non-alcoholic beer, which now accounts for about 10 percent of the market for the drink.
