Barcelona are on the verge of winning back-to-back La Liga titles, as a draw against Real Madrid in the highly contested El Clasico is enough for them to secure the championship, with the game to be played on Sunday. The Madrid club is in crisis after a dressing room clash between two key players.
Hansi Flick’s side have an 11-point lead over their arch-rivals and, although only one point is enough for them, a win would bring them even closer to historic success and celebrating the title in impressive fashion.
If Barcelona win their remaining four league games this season, starting with a match against a side going through a turbulent period under Álvaro Arbeloa in Catalonia, they would equal the record of 100 points in a season.
If they beat Real Madrid and then Real Betis in the next round, Barcelona would become the first club to win all home games in a season of 38 rounds.
Tensions in Madrid culminated after a season in which the club would go trophyless, only the fifth time this century.
After a clash in training between French midfielder Aurelian Tchouameni and Uruguayan player Federico Valverde, Valverde ended up in hospital with a head injury and will be out for around two weeks.
Although Valverde stated that he “accidentally” collided with an object during the altercation, which caused a minor cut on his forehead, the incident did not calm the situation at the club.
Real Madrid fined both players 500,000 euros, announcing that they apologized to their teammates, coaching staff and fans.
Coach Alvaro Arbeloa said that he was satisfied with the quick reaction of the club and the fact that the players took responsibility and apologized.
He added that, despite the incident, Tchouameni will be in the squad for El Clasico.
