At sunset tonight, Ramadan begins, the holy month, the Muslim fasting month.
The first day of the Muslim fast is Thursday, February 19, and according to the Takvim of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Eid prayer will be offered on Friday, March 20, at 6:29 a.m.
Fasting in the month of Ramadan is one of the fundamental pillars of Islam and is a clear obligation for every adult, sane and healthy Muslim man and woman who stays at home.
Fasting lasts from dawn until sunset.
During fasting, the believer is prohibited from taking food and drink, smoking, as well as marital intimacy. However, fasting is not only about abstaining from physical needs. Fasting signifies spiritual cleansing, discipline and empathy, with exceptions for the sick and travelers.
Ramadan is also associated with the obligation to give sadekatul-fitr, which applies to every adult Muslim man and woman who, during Ramadan, has excess food beyond what is needed for one day. Sadekatul-fitr is given by the breadwinner of the family, both for himself and for his family members, in accordance with his own financial capabilities.
Ramadan ends with Eid al-Fitr, which in 2026 is celebrated from Friday, March 20. This holiday marks the end of the month of Ramadan and lasts for three days. Since the Islamic calendar relies on the lunar cycle, the exact date may vary by one day depending on the first sighting of the young.
During Ramadan, Rijaset IZ in Bosnia and Herzegovina and other organizational units of the Islamic community will organize numerous religious activities and unique programs on the occasion of marking significant dates – the Battle of Badr, the conquest of Mecca and Laylatul-Qadr, the night in which the publication of the Qur’an began, God’s last revelation, writes N1 BiH.
