As many as 42 percent of food in Europe contains the remains of pesticides, with more than half of these samples contaminated with several different pesticides at the same time, reveals the latest report of the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA).
Fruits such as pears and oranges are particularly sensitive.
The survey conducted every three years includes samples of twelve foods, ie carrots, cauliflower, kiwi, ports, oranges, pears, potatoes, brown beans, rye, beef liver and animal fats.
The EFSA conducted a survey based on 13,246 food samples from EU countries, Norwegian and Iceland. The worst condition is in Germany, then Cyprus, Austria and the Czech Republic. Croatia is in the ninth place.
In the study, Slovenia had 154 samples, of which 42.2 percent were produced in the country, 46.1 percent in the European Union, and 11.7 percent were delivered to Slovenia from the third country or are unknown origin. Less than 30 percent of all samples from Slovenia contained pesticides, states the work.
The results show that 96.3 percent of all samples in law prescribed limits. However, experts warn that current safety standards do not take into account the effects of combined action of several pesticides, which is a potential risk for people’s health, especially children and pregnant women.
Pan Europe (Action Network) Organization calls for the introduction of a mixed assessment factor in order to better protect public health.
The amount of food containing pesticides has also almost changed since 2000. years. However, the PAN organization emphasizes that the amount of food containing more different pesticides at the same time doubled.
“It is worrying that Europeans are exposed to pesticides at such a high level, while the European Union ignores potential consequences,” said Angeliki Lysimachou, Chief of Science in Pan Europe.
