The Sun revealed that Sterling was arrested by Hampshire police after crashing his Lamborghini into barriers.
Police stopped the former England international and detained him on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs, dangerous driving, possession of a Class C drug and failure to provide a sample.
Sterling was later released on bail and the investigation continues.
Hampshire Constabulary issued a statement to The Sun.
“Just before 9am on Thursday we received a call that a Lamborghini had crashed into barriers on the M3 southbound near the Minley junction.
No other vehicles were involved and no injuries were reported.
The driver, a 31-year-old from Bergshire, was arrested on suspicion of drink driving, dangerous driving, possession of a Class C drug and failure to provide a sample.
He has been released on bail while our investigation continues.”
In the UK, Class C drugs include nitrous oxide and GHB, while sedatives such as Valium and steroids also fall into this category.
No information has been released about the substance Sterling is alleged to be in possession of.
