The attack occurred near the coast of Shifri Beach in Brazil’s tourist state of Pernambuco, according to the State Committee for Monitoring Shark Incidents (CEMIT).
The boy was taken to the hospital, but “he did not survive his injuries,” added CEMIT, b92 reports.
The authorities announced that dozens of beaches along the turquoise coast of Pernambuco have been marked with warnings of the presence of sharks, noting that there are as many as four such signs for bathers on Shifri Beach, writes the Daily Mail.
Despite this, CEMIT announced that it would step up monitoring of sharks after the boy’s death and restart a previously suspended program to track the animals with microchips.
Since 1992, more than 80 shark attacks have been recorded in Pernambuco, 26 of which were fatal, not counting the boy who died on Thursday, according to CEMIT.
