At least 40 people were killed in an attack on a funeral in the town of el-Obeid, the center of Sudan’s Kordofan region, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on Wednesday.
The statement did not say exactly when the attack took place or who was responsible, but the incident came as the paramilitary Rapid Support Group (RSF) forces were poised to launch an offensive on the city, while government troops were massing to stop them.
– The security situation in the Kordofan region continues to deteriorate – says OCHA, warning that the violence is spreading and further hampering the access of humanitarian aid to the population, which has been under siege and in difficult conditions for months.
The city of el-Obeid is one of the key strategic centers in central Sudan, and control over it has become the main goal of the conflicting parties in the war between the Sudanese army and the RSF, which has been ongoing since April last year.
