Among the dead was a doctor who rushed to help victims of an attack in the southern city of Khan Younis and was then killed in a second attack at the same location, health officials said.
Other attacks hit the northern city of Gaza, where health officials said a five-month-old boy was killed. The attacks come three days after Israel reopened Gaza’s main border crossing with Egypt, an important step in a US-backed truce.
– While we were sleeping in our house, a tank shelled us, and the shells hit our house, our children were killed – my son was killed, my brother’s son and daughter were killed. We have nothing, we are peaceful people – said Abu Mohamed Habouch, speaking in sukopua for his family.
Tents in Mawasi, a coastal area near Khan Younis packed with Gazans displaced by the conflict, were torn apart by the attacks. Almost the entire population of Gaza of over two million was forced to leave their homes.
Israel’s military said it launched the strikes in response to fighters firing on Israeli soldiers operating near the cease-fire line with Hamas.
It was reported that an Israeli soldier was seriously wounded in the firing by the fighters, which they described as a violation of the ceasefire agreement.
Hamas said the Israeli action undermined efforts to stabilize the truce. In a statement, the group called for “immediate international pressure to stop the violations.”
