Zelensky: Russia has no intention of ending the war

Zelenskiy made his comments as a US-brokered ceasefire tied to the 81st anniversary of Russia’s victory over Nazi Germany nears its end.

“Today there was no silence on the front line of the battlefield. Russia has no intention of ending this war and, unfortunately, we are preparing for new attacks,” Zelensky said in his evening video address.

Both sides have reported fighting along their long battle lines despite the ceasefire, and each has accused the other of drone and artillery attacks.

Ukraine and Russia agreed on Friday to a May 9-11 ceasefire as part of a US push for peace after more than four years of war sparked by a Russian invasion in 2022. Trump said on Friday he hoped the ceasefire would be extended, but there were already signs of tension on Sunday.

On Saturday, after commemorating Victory Day, Putin said he thought the war was coming to an end. He said he would be willing to negotiate new security arrangements for Europe, with former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder as his preferred partner.

But European foreign ministers, meeting in Brussels on Monday, rejected Putin’s proposal on Schröder because he worked for Russian state companies and cultivated a close relationship with Putin.
