A key meeting was held behind closed doors. Chinese leader Xi Jinping during his conversation with US President Donald Trump raised the sensitive issue of Taiwan, which he called “the most important issue” in the relations between the two countries.
According to Xi, proper management of the issue allows for the stability of China-US relations. “However, if it is not managed properly, the two countries could clash or even come to conflict, which would push the entire Sino-US relationship into a very dangerous situation,” Xi said, according to China’s Xinhua news agency.

Trump and Xi walked through Beijing’s Temple of Heaven accompanied by a guide who explained the history of the building. The rest of the delegation stood aside as the two leaders toured the impressive blue-and-gold imperial building, part of a temple complex where emperors once prayed for a good harvest.
Xi was smiling, while Trump appeared to be listening intently to the guide. The Chinese president then led him to where they posed together in silence for the cameras.
When asked by a journalist how the talks are progressing, Trump answered briefly: “Great”.
However, when another reporter asked if he had discussed Taiwan, Trump ignored the question and instead praised the setting: “Great place, amazing. China is beautiful.”
Although the Taiwan question was raised twice more, Trump, just like Xi, just kept looking straight ahead. There was no answer even as the two leaders turned to head for the temple steps.
