Sky News correspondent from the US David Blevins believes that behind Trump’s message there is a combination of strategic and political reasons.
“Donald Trump may now be trying to find a way out and shift the Strait of Hormuz problem to NATO allies,” Blevins said.
“If we analyze it very briefly, strategically… I think it’s three things. First, he’s trying to put pressure on allies to protect shipping through the passage while he’s looking for a way out of this war,” the Sky News correspondent said.
“Secondly, it further emphasizes its long-standing thesis that America carries too much of a burden within NATO,” he said, then added:
“And third, there’s the domestic aspect – he wants voters in the United States to hear the message that America is doing too much.”
Trump’s statements come as allies are divided over the military role in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s key oil shipping routes, and the war with Iran enters its third week.
