More information is now coming in about what may be happening on the ground in Jamaica, with Brian Trascher, vice president of the US nonprofit United Cajun Navy, saying conditions are “rapidly deteriorating” as Hurricane Melissa approaches the island.
Trascher told CNN This Morning’s John Berman that the track of this Category 5 hurricane — a “monstrous storm” — made evacuation efforts much more difficult, as the storm moved westward before stalling.
“It looks like it will eventually turn northeast again,” he said, adding: “It was very difficult to deploy people safely in advance … like we were playing dodgeball.”
Trascher urged residents to prepare for the devastation that Melissa is likely to bring, noting, “There is no precaution that is too great or excessive… The wind speeds will be extremely destructive… life-threatening.”

He warned people to watch out for objects that could be lifted and carried by strong gusts of wind, as they would turn into dangerous projectiles capable of breaking through windows and wooden structures.
Trascher also warned of the risk of landslides, advising residents to seek shelter in concrete structures, on the lee side of hills and mountains or at higher altitudes to avoid flash floods.
“I was talking about trillions of gallons of water being dumped on a mountain island — and gravity is only going to pull that water in one direction: downhill,” he added.
