And the beginning did not foreshadow such an epilogue.
The first set was broken in the very finish. With the score 5:4 for his rival, Đere saved the set ball on his serve to use the second break point in the next game to take the lead 6:5. On his serve, he had three opportunities to take the first set, he used the third and took a 1:0 lead.
This did not sway the famous Swiss, who will turn 41 in March. He played much better in the second set. He took Djere’s serve in the fourth game, missed a few more opportunities to break, and then in the ninth game he broke even in sets on his opening shot.
He didn’t stop even in the third part. In the seventh game, Wawrinka reached three tied break points. He didn’t realize any of them, but he won the advantage again, which he used this time to lead 4:3. He preserved his advantage and reached a 2:1 advantage in sets.
Laszlo threw the first blow in the fourth set. He broke in the sixth game, leading 4:2, but Wawrinka responded immediately with a re-break.
