After this club’s relegation to the 2nd Bundesliga, Vasilj decided that it was time to say goodbye, and on that occasion he addressed the fans of the club from Hamburg.
“Dear St. Pauli family, sometimes the hardest thing is not to say goodbye when you win, but to keep your dignity when you fail. Five years ago I came as a goalkeeper, and I’m leaving as someone who left a part of myself in this club, city and among all these people,” began Vasilj and continued:

“For me, St. Pauli will always be more than football. There will be people who have become family, fans who sang when there was no reason to sing. The club that taught me that loyalty means the most in difficult times.”
“Thank you to everyone who believed, supported, criticized, stood and stayed with us through good and bad days. Thank you to my teammates, coaching staff and everyone who was part of this journey”.
“I’m leaving, but a part of me stays here forever. In the locker room, on the field and every step I took wearing this jersey. I may not be a member of this club anymore, but I’ll be a fan forever. Some stories don’t end happily, but that doesn’t mean they weren’t worth it. I’m sorry we didn’t stay where we belong. Thank you for everything. Goodbye or maybe just see you again one day.”
Vasilj is in St. Pauli arrived in the summer of 2021 from the Ukrainian Zorya and left a deep mark on the German club in the previous five years.
In total, he made 167 appearances for St. Pauli. Before that, he performed for Međugorje, Zrinjski, Igman, Branitelj and Nurnberg II.
It remains to be seen in which club Nikola Vasilj will continue his career, and some clubs from the 1st Bundesliga, as well as the English Premier League, have shown interest in him.
