Oleksandr Usyk, the current heavyweight champion, has openly expressed his concerns about the upcoming match between Jake Paul and Anthony Joshua, scheduled for December 19th.
He thinks that a popular American influencer can get seriously hurt in the ring.
Usik, who hoped to arrange an MMA fight with Paul, emphasizes that the difference in physical strength and experience between the two fighters has never been greater.
Joshua is about ten centimeters taller than Paul, and weighs as much as 23 kilograms more, which is a huge difference in professional boxing. The Ukrainian knows what he’s talking about – he’s beaten Joshua twice and knows firsthand how dangerous he is.
In his statement to Boxing Scene, Usik was brutally direct.
“If Anthony Joshua wants to, he can seriously hurt this guy. Joshua is an Olympic champion. Jake Paul is a YouTuber, an athlete, an entertainer. Joshua is a Rolls Royce, Paul is a Fiat. I told the truth. I will pray for him,” he stated.
In addition to concern for Paul’s safety, Usik also has a personal interest, he wanted to contract a fight with him in the octagon and fears that a match with Josh could completely destroy that possibility.
“I want a fight with Jake Paul in MMA, but I’m afraid that after Joshua there won’t be anything left of him,” he added.
The difference in their careers is huge: Joshua won Olympic gold as an amateur and became a two-time world heavyweight champion, while Paul entered the ring professionally only in 2020, having previously done only one amateur match.
