The missing Americans were taking part in Exercise Africa Lion 2026, an annual joint exercise designed to strengthen cooperation between US forces, NATO allies and African countries, officials said.
AFRICOM said they were reported missing on Saturday near the Cap Draa training ground, which is located not far from the town of Tan-Tan in Morocco. A search for the soldiers is underway, involving the ground, air and naval forces of the United States, Morocco and other countries, officials said.
Exercise African Lion is the continent’s largest annual joint military exercise, taking place across Morocco, Ghana, Senegal and Tunisia.
The focus of the exercise is on cross-domain operations, crisis response and multinational coordination to enhance regional security and ensure emergency preparedness.
The exercise, which includes 5,000 participants from more than 40 countries and more than 30 industry partners from the US, runs from April 27 to May 8.
