The ruling shows once again how broad the anti-corruption campaign that Chinese President Xi Jinping has been carrying out since he came to power in 2012, especially within the military.
The Chinese military has been under great pressure for years due to investigations and purges related to corruption, and during 2023 the investigations included the elite missile forces in charge of nuclear and conventional weapons.
According to Xinhua’s earlier allegations, Li Shangfu was accused of receiving huge amounts of money through bribes, but also of bribing other people. The investigation showed that he did not fulfill his political duties and that he used his position to secure privileges for himself and others in personnel appointments.
On the other hand, the investigation against Wei, which was launched in 2023, found that he received large sums of money and valuable gifts in exchange for favors, as well as helping others to obtain illegal benefits through military appointments. Xinhua described his actions as “extremely serious”, with great damage and very negative consequences.
The Chinese authorities clarified that the death sentence with a two-year suspension is generally commuted to life imprisonment if the convicted person does not commit a new crime during that period. After that, he will not have the right to additional mitigation of the sentence or the possibility of parole.
The anti-corruption campaign in the Chinese army was further strengthened at the beginning of this year, when one of the most influential Chinese generals, Zhang Youxia, a longtime ally of Xi and a member of the Politburo, was dismissed.
The International Institute for Strategic Studies has previously warned that ongoing corruption purges are having serious consequences for the Chinese military’s command structure and are likely to slow its modernization and combat readiness.
