“Israel does not want to ensure its own security. Israel wants more territory. The Netanyahu government is using security as an excuse to occupy additional territory,” Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said at a diplomatic forum in Antalya, southern Turkey.
According to the head of Turkish diplomacy, apart from the Palestinian territories (Gaza Strip, West Bank, East Jerusalem), Israel is now trying to exercise its dominance over the territories belonging to Lebanon and Syria.
“This is a continuous occupation and expansionism. This must stop,” Fidan added, asserting that “Israel has created an illusion at the international level by pretending that it only demands its own security.”
Turkey’s foreign minister had already accused Israel on Monday of wanting to turn Turkey into its “new enemy” after Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz described Turkey as a “paper tiger”.
Fidan also expressed regret today that the conflict in the Middle East is slowing down efforts, including those undertaken by Ankara, to end the conflict in Ukraine.
“This has relegated the war between Russia and Ukraine to the background,” Fidan said and called for continued efforts to end the war in Ukraine once peace is restored in the Middle East.
