The deputy US ambassador to the United Nations stressed Tuesday night that President Donald Trump will not allow Israel to annex any part of the West Bank. Speaking during a session of the UN Security Council, she added that Trump expects an end to the violence in the West Bank.
– The United States of America remains focused on Israel’s security and stability in Gaza and the West Bank – said Jennifer Locetta to the UN Security Council.
– President Trump is completely clear: the US expects an end to violence in the West Bank and will not allow the annexation of the West Bank – she added.
The West Bank is home to 2.7 million Palestinians who have limited self-government under Israeli military occupation. Hundreds of thousands of Israelis settled the area.
Most of the world powers consider the Israeli settlements, which are located in the territories won in the 1967 war, illegal, and numerous resolutions of the UN Security Council call on Israel to stop all settlement activities. Israel denies illegality, citing biblical and historical ties to the territories.
On Tuesday, the Israeli military announced plans to demolish several structures in the northern Nur al-Shams refugee camp, a long-standing camp in the West Bank near the town of Tulkarm.
The military claims that the camps in the area “serve as centers of gravity for terrorist activities.” Palestinian media reported that Mayor Tulkarm condemned the move as “completely criminal.”
In March, the Israeli army destroyed large parts of the camp to provide passage for military units, forcing thousands of Palestinians to flee their homes. The army tightened restrictions on movement and conducted large-scale raids in several cities.
In November, Human Rights Watch accused Israel of war crimes and crimes against humanity for what it says are forced evictions in the West Bank. Israel continues to deny that it has committed such crimes.
