“Based on discussions with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir of Pakistan, during which they asked me to delay the destructive force that was directed at Iran tonight, and on the condition that the Islamic Republic of Iran agrees to the full, immediate and safe opening of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack on Iran for a period of two weeks. This will be a mutual ceasefire!”, announced Trump.
“We have received a 10-point proposal from Iran and we believe it represents a workable basis for negotiations. Almost all points of previous disagreement have already been agreed between the US and Iran, but the two-week period will allow the agreement to be finalized and concluded,” he added.
US President Donald Trump called this a “great day for world peace” and announced that the US would participate in securing maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a key world route that Iran had largely closed during the conflict.
“We’ll be bringing in various supplies and just being there to make sure everything goes as it should. I’m confident it will,” he wrote.
Speaking to AFP after the ceasefire was announced, he said Iran’s enriched uranium “will be fully under control” under the deal, without giving further details.
“Or I wouldn’t have agreed to the deal,” Trump said.
Asked if he would go back on earlier threats to destroy Iran’s power plants and bridges if the deal collapses, he said: “You’ll see.”
Trump, who is scheduled to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping next month, also said he believes China was involved in encouraging Iran to negotiate a truce.
The US-Iran conflict began on February 28 with US-Israeli attacks, and the truce comes after Trump threatened to intensify attacks and “wipe out civilization” if no agreement is reached.
