Speaking to Fox News, Trump said he was considering “destroying everything” and “taking the oil” if Iran did not move quickly enough toward the deal.
He said he had granted amnesty to Iran’s negotiators to ensure talks could continue, although there was no immediate response from Tehran. Trump previously said that Washington is in contact with the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf.
Iran did not respond to Trump’s assertion that a deal could be close.
The remarks came on the same day Trump issued a stark warning on his social media platform Truth Social, declaring that Tuesday would be “Iran’s Day of Power Plants and Bridges All in One” – referring to his threats to target Iran’s infrastructure – adding: “There will be nothing like that.”
He also warned Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz “or you will live in hell – just watch”.
The region has been on high alert since the US and Israel launched a joint offensive against Iran on February 28, killing more than 1,340 people, including then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Iran has retaliated with drone and missile attacks on Israel, Jordan, Iraq and the Gulf states that host US forces, while restricting movement through the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway through which roughly 20 million barrels of oil a day passed before the war began.
