The American president said this in the Oval Office after the king’s state visit, answering a question about the speech that Charles gave in Congress, in which he made some indirect criticisms of the executive power in the USA, writes Sky News.
Trump first expressed “great disappointment” with NATO after, as he says, the US “asked them to do something about Ukraine and Iran.” He then turned to the British monarch.
“The king is fantastic. We’ve spent a lot of time together and we’ve talked a lot, including about this. He loves his country, he’s a great king and a great friend,” Trump said. “I think if he was asked, he would probably help us with Iran.”
The president also recalled his speech during the White House state dinner, when he said Charles “agrees with me, even more than I do” that Iran should never have nuclear weapons.
In response, a Buckingham Palace spokesman said: “The King is, of course, aware of his government’s long-standing and well-known position on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.”
Donald Trump in the White House also commented on British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Relations between the US president and prime minister have soured in recent months, with Trump blaming the UK for its lack of military support in the conflict with Iran.
The US president told reporters in the Oval Office that he believed his good relationship with the king “probably helps” him in communicating with Starmer.
