US President Donald Trump has announced that he will visit Chinese President Xi Jinping on May 14 and 15, postponing his previously planned trip to China due to the current war in Iran.
Trump announced on the Truth Social network that he will host Xi in Washington later this year and that preparations are underway for that visit.
The trip was originally planned from March 31 to April 2. The talks were to cover easing trade tensions, as well as topics such as Taiwan, chips, drugs, rare earth metals and agriculture.
The Chinese embassy in Washington has not yet commented, while White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt said Xi understood the delay in the visit.
Trump’s last visit to China was in 2017 and it was the last visit of an American president to that country.
The talks in May will be the first since a meeting in South Korea in October, when the two leaders agreed on a trade truce.
