In August 2001, the Senate unanimously confirmed Mueller as FBI director, and he has served at the agency for more than ten years. He retired from the FBI in 2013.
Four years later, Mueller finds himself at the center of a political maelstrom. His investigation into Russian attempts to influence the 2016 presidential election and the potential involvement of Trump and his campaign was an almost daily source of intrigue and speculation for nearly two years, from May 2017 to March 2019.
Court documents from his special counsel’s office were meticulously analyzed, and each new revelation represented a potential bombshell that, depending on one’s perspective, could bring down the president.
Trump called Mueller’s investigation a “witch hunt” and considered him one of his biggest political opponents.
During the investigation, Mueller’s team looked into the actions of Russia, as well as several members of Trump’s campaign staff and allies. Despite his work often making headlines, Mueller himself rarely spoke publicly.
The investigation resulted in multiple indictments and settlements with former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, as well as national security adviser Michael Flynn.
In the end, Mueller’s 448-page report was thorough but ultimately inconclusive. It found that Russia interfered in the 2016 election in a “pervasive and systemic manner,” but did not find that members of the Trump campaign conspired or coordinated those activities.
