Speaking at the gathering of Latin American leaders “Shield of America” in Miami, Florida, Trump said that Cuba is “at the end of the road”. “They want to negotiate and are negotiating with Marco (Rubio), with me and with others, I think that an agreement with Cuba would be reached very easily,” he stressed.
Yesterday, in a telephone interview with the American CNN, Trump said that he is convinced that Cuba is on the verge of collapse.
“Cuba, by the way, is going to fall soon,” he emphasized, while praising the military successes of the United States during his second term.
At the same time, he claims that Havana wants a deal: “They want to get a deal, so I’m going to send Secretary of State Marco Rubio there and we’ll see how it works. We’re really focused on this right now. We have a lot of time, but Cuba is ready, after 50 years.”
Such statements by Trump are not new. Already at the end of January, he said that “Cuba is really a nation that is very close to collapse.” He also said that the Caribbean country used to receive money and oil from Venezuela, but that this is no longer possible after the US intervention.
US forces have taken control of several oil tankers. Trump previously announced that he would impose a “complete and comprehensive embargo on all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela.”
Earlier, he also announced a “friendly takeover” of Cuba, but neither the annexation nor the breakup of the country, with or without the participation of the USA, has been realized so far.
Relations between Havana and Washington have been strained for decades. Currently, the authoritarian Caribbean island is in the worst economic crisis since Fidel Castro’s revolution in 1959. Among other things, there is a shortage of fuel. If the United States permanently blocks the supply of oil from Venezuela, the Cuban economy could completely collapse, reports Index.hr.
