“When you say ‘support,’ they’re not at war with us or anything like that,” Trump said when asked if he discussed China’s support for Iran during a meeting with Xi earlier Thursday in Beijing, in an interview with FOX News.
“He said he’s not going to give military equipment. That’s a big statement,” Trump said.
Trump also pointed out that Xi told him that China wants the Strait of Hormuz to remain open because Beijing buys large quantities of oil from the region.
“He said they’re buying a lot of oil there and they’d like to continue that,” Trump said, adding that Xi “would like to see the Strait of Hormuz open.”
“President Xi would like to see an agreement reached. He said, ‘If I can help in any way, I would like to help.’ Anyone buying that much oil obviously has some kind of connection, but they would like to see the Strait of Hormuz open,” Trump added.
Chinese authorities did not immediately respond to Trump’s claims.
The statement on the talks released by the Chinese Foreign Ministry did not mention Iran or the Strait of Hormuz.
The statement said the leaders exchanged views on “major international and regional issues, such as the situation in the Middle East, the crisis in Ukraine and the Korean Peninsula.”
