United States President Donald Trump on Monday called on Australia to grant asylum to members of the Iranian women’s soccer team residing in the country, after the players refused to sing the national anthem during a match.
“Australia is making a huge humanitarian mistake by allowing the Iranian women’s soccer team to be forcibly returned to Iran, where they will most likely be killed,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.
“Don’t do it, Mr. Prime Minister – give them asylum. The United States of America will take them in if you don’t,” Trump added, addressing Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
