The President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, announced on Sunday that he is appointing the governor of the federal state of Louisiana, Jeff Landry, as a special envoy for Greenland.
In a post on the Truth Social social network, Trump stated that Landry understands how important Greenland is to the national security of the United States of America and that he will strongly represent the country’s interests for the safety and survival of American allies, as well as global stability.
Over the past years, Trump has repeatedly stated that Greenland, a territory under the sovereignty of Denmark with a high degree of self-government, should become part of the United States of America. He cited security interests and the island’s rich mineral resources as reasons. Landry publicly supported the idea earlier this year.
In a January 9 post on Platform X, Landry stated that Trump is right and that Greenland should become part of the US, saying that such a move would be beneficial for both sides.
The White House, the Greenland Prime Minister’s Office, as well as Jeff Landry’s representatives, did not immediately respond to media requests for comment. It is also unclear whether Landry, who took over as governor in January 2024, would have to step down if he accepted the new role.
Greenland and Denmark have repeatedly rejected the possibility of Greenland becoming part of the United States of America.
Although the United States and Greenland expressed a willingness to respect each other earlier this month, Greenland’s Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeldt said the comments from the US had caused insecurity among the local population.
She emphasized the need for open dialogue and the restoration of trust, reminding that Greenland and the United States of America have been cooperating for 80 years on the basis of common interests, so that cooperation could continue in the future.
