US President Donald Trump and his team are discussing the possibility of acquiring Greenland, and using the US military to achieve that goal is “always an option”, the White House said on Tuesday.
– President Trump has made it clear that the acquisition of Greenland is a national security priority for the United States and that it is critical to deter our adversaries in the Arctic region, the White House said in a statement to Reuters.
– The president and his team are discussing a number of options to achieve this important foreign policy goal, and of course, the use of the US military is always an option available to the commander in chief, she added.
Greenland and the Danish government called earlier on Tuesday for urgent talks with the United States after Trump renewed demands to annex the Arctic island, an autonomous Danish territory.
Nuuk and Copenhagen requested an urgent meeting with the US secretary of state to “discuss significant statements by the United States regarding Greenland,” Greenland’s foreign minister Vivian Motzfeldt wrote on Facebook.
Earlier in the day, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain and the United Kingdom issued a joint statement expressing support for Denmark in the face of Trump’s demands for Greenland.
The Nordic foreign ministers also emphasized in a joint statement that Denmark and Greenland should decide exclusively on issues concerning Denmark and Greenland.
In Paris, where she participated in a meeting of the ‘coalition of the willing’, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen welcomed the show of solidarity.
Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen also thanked European leaders for their ‘unequivocal support’.
Greenland has repeatedly stated that it is not for sale and that it will decide on its own future.
On numerous occasions in recent days, Trump and his associates have expressed their intention to place the huge arctic island with 57,000 inhabitants under the American flag.
