Emergency services responded to a report of an explosion at a home in Lamar Township, Clinton County, around 8:30 a.m. local time Sunday. Firefighters found the house completely engulfed in flames, and a 34-year-old woman and her children were trapped inside, unable to save them.
Investigators believe a propane leak in the home may have been the cause of the explosion. Police identified the victim as Sarah B Stolzfus, and the dead included four boys and two girls, ages three to 11.
Footage from local media shows thick black smoke and a fire that partially collapsed the house. The investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing.
Neighbor Christina Duck said she heard a loud explosion while eating breakfast with her daughter, after which she saw flames and called for help. Firefighters arrived quickly, but, he says, the house burned too quickly for anything to be saved.
