The accident occurred on Wednesday when the bus lost control while approaching the ferry at Daulatdia in Rajbari district, about 100 kilometers from Dhaka. The bus overturned and sank nearly nine meters into the river, according to police, fire and civil protection.
Rescuers pulled 22 bodies from the submerged bus, including six men, 11 women and five children, said Talha Bin Zasim, a fire service official.
So far, twenty-four people have been confirmed dead, including two women who died after being rescued, he said.
Four fire units and 10 divers led the search and rescue operation, with support from the military, police, coastguard and local authorities.
Officials fear more passengers could be missing. Hundreds of people die every year in road and ferry accidents in Bangladesh.
