The meeting comes ahead of a gathering of G7 trade ministers on Wednesday. US President Donald Trump has threatened to raise tariffs on EU car imports from 15% to 25%, unhappy with the slow implementation of the trade deal reached last summer in Turnberry.
Such a move would hit the German auto industry the most and make Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s position even more difficult. Trump also ordered a reduction in US troops in Germany following criticism of Merz.
The European Commission said it will “keep all options open” to protect EU interests. Within the EU, negotiations on the implementation of the agreement are still ongoing, with divisions: France is asking for caution and additional conditions, while Germany and the majority want a quick implementation.
