A telecommunications failure brought air traffic to a near standstill in Greece this morning, leaving thousands of passengers stranded across Europe after a communications outage forced Greece to close its airspace, causing mass cancellations and flight delays.
According to the BBC, some departures have already been cleared, but arriving planes are still being diverted or returned to their original airport.
According to Greek television station ERT, citing the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority, all airports in the country were affected, including the international airports in Athens and Thessaloniki, German news agency dpa reported. Athens’ main airport is among the hardest hit, while Thessaloniki’s airport is completely closed.
Officials are now trying to determine why there was a loss of radio communication in the first place.
The problem appeared in the central radio and communication systems used by air traffic control centers, the Greek Civil Aviation Authority said. Flight controllers cannot communicate with each other, dpa added.
