Competent institutions of all levels of government in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina continue to monitor the hydrometeorological situation, given that, according to the forecasts of the Federal Hydrometeorological Institute, snowfalls are expected in the territory of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the coming period, which may cause problems in functioning, and that the sudden melting of snow may cause the occurrence of flash floods and landslides, announced the Government of FBiH.
They further state that the cantonal and municipal, i.e. city civil protection services are obliged to continuously visit and monitor the most vulnerable areas exposed to snowfall, floods and landslides and that, if they have not done so so far, put their organized protection and rescue forces on alert, including protection and rescue services and specialized civil protection units.
“The goal is for these forces to be ready as a first responder in accordance with their competences, obligations and valid protection and rescue plans, and to respond in a timely manner to potential dangers in order to protect people and material goods in the area of cantons, municipalities and cities,” the statement states.
Federal specialized units of civil protection are still in a state of readiness in case of the need for their engagement, that is, a quick response in the field. A special emphasis was placed on the Federal specialized unit for water rescue, as well as the Federal specialized unit for pumping out water with high-capacity pumps.
After the rainfall recorded in the period 5/6. January 2026, and due to the melting of the snow cover, the Federal Hydrometeorological Institute, based on available meteorological and hydrological forecasts, as well as available platforms, including EFAS, submitted a Notice on possible flash floods and landslides in the territory of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The expected peak of the water wave is forecast for January 7, 2026.
According to the further forecast of the Federal Hydrometeorological Institute, the watercourses will mostly be in a phase of stagnation. Precipitation will continue to be present, but there are currently no indications of a significant worsening of the hydrometeorological situation. The data of the competent institutions show that the most complex situation continues to be recorded in the watercourses of the rivers Trebižat, Buna and Bunica, where increased supervision and monitoring of the situation on the ground continues, writes Radio Sarajevo.
