The World Bank has approved 46 million euros for BiH waste through a new project that should improve solid waste management and improve services for more than a million inhabitants in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The decision on financing was made by the Board of Executive Directors of the World Bank.
It is a project that aims to modernize the waste disposal system, with a special focus on the closure and rehabilitation of unsanitary landfills and the improvement of regional sanitary landfills. Expansion of waste separation, recycling, composting and reuse activities is also planned.
According to data from the World Bank, the project should enable the safe and sanitary disposal of more than 420,000 tons of municipal waste per year, while at the same time the rate of recycling and reuse is expected to increase to around 20 percent.
It was also stated that through this program, more than a million people in Bosnia and Herzegovina should receive better waste management services. As part of the implementation of the project, more than 100 new jobs are expected to be created in the waste management sector and related activities.
The project, known as the Sustainable Waste Management Project, in addition to infrastructure investments, foresees institutional support to municipalities, cantons and utility companies in order to strengthen the capacities for waste management and improve the long-term sustainability of the system.
As announced by the World Bank, the goal of the project is to enable local communities to switch from unsafe methods of waste disposal to more modern and sustainable systems that contribute to the protection of the environment and public health.
