According to the World Bank, energy prices are expected to rise by 24 percent this year, which would be the highest level since 2022 and the start of the war in Ukraine, while the conflict with Iran is further destabilizing global commodity markets.

In its latest Commodity Market Outlook report, the World Bank predicts that overall commodity prices will rise by 16 percent in 2026, driven by higher energy and fertilizer prices, as well as record values of certain key metals.

The bank expects the average price of Brent oil to average $86 per barrel in 2026, up from $69 in 2025, assuming that the most severe disruptions to transportation will end in May, and that shipping through the Strait of Hormuz will gradually return to pre-conflict levels by the end of 2026.

Attacks on energy infrastructure and disruptions to maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 35 percent of the world’s seaborne crude oil trade passes, caused what is said to be the biggest oil supply shock on record, reducing global supply initially by about 10 million barrels a day.
